Athletes, Please Endorse Health!

Ok, so this is for sure a soap box post but I just dont get it. Why Why Why do athletes and celebrities put their name to crap food, drugs, and stuff that is just not health? Yes, I know money, endorsements, attention. Do we have an obesity epidemic? Do we have a health crisis? Then why can’t health not be endorsed? Any athlete/celebrity tell me why?

So you have Drew Brees. I love Brees, came from my favorite college team Purdue. He’s like the guy you could just sit down and have a conversation with like he was your friend, and my brother has on many occasions, so I know he is the real deal. He has done amazing things for New Orleans and for others, no doubt he has a huge heart and is a role model. BUT Nyquil? Come on Drew!  I know for your body and what you are putting it through surely you know there are healthier alternatives to taking over the counter medications like Nyquil and Dayquil.  What is even in them does anyone know?

Well here you go:

  • Acetaminophen (325 mg/15 mL) (pain reliever/fever reducer) SIDE EFFECTS: Anxiety; drowsiness; dry mouth, nose, or throat; heartburn; nausea; nervousness; thickening of mucus in the nose and throat; upset stomach.
  • Dextromethorphan (15 mg/15 mL) (cough suppressant) SIDE EFFECTS Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); difficulty urinating; fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat; fever; hallucinations; mental or mood changes (eg, anxiety, nervousness); paleness; seizures; severe or persistent dizziness, lightheadedness, or headache; tremor.
  • Doxylamine succinate (6.25 mg/15 mL) (antihistamine/hypnotic) SIDE EFFECTS: irregular heartbeat, constipation, dizziness, excessive sweating.
All of these things scream awful for our livers and kidneys. No you aren’t popping them all day long everyday, but who when they get sick and takes a drug, does things to repair their body afterwards? Again I love drew brees, and he is america’s golden boy, but I wish he represented health instead of a drug. He is also about to have a nyquil commercial with his son in it, hmmmm.
Next the Manning brothers and Williams sisters… You know what commercial I am talking about. OREO’s. They are cute, funny commercials. But how many kids idolize these sports figures. How many of these kids will also go to the grocery store and want oreos to be like the Mannings? ALOT! When you have the world as an audience and so many children idolizing you, why not promote spinach or broccoli… Just a thought?
Ingredients in Oreo Cookies: SUGAR, ENRICHED FLOUR (WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMINE MONONITRATE {VITAMIN B1}, RIBOFLAVIN {VITAMIN B2}, FOLIC ACID), HIGH OLEIC CANOLA OIL AND/OR PALM OIL AND/OR CANOLA OIL, AND/OR SOYBEAN OIL, COCOA (PROCESSED WITH ALKALI), HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, CORNSTARCH, LEAVENING (BAKING SODA AND/OR CALCIUM PHOSPHATE), SALT, SOY LECITHIN (EMULSIFIER), VANILLIN – AN ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, CHOCOLATE. CONTAINS: WHEAT, SOY
Lets just say for instance you traded the typical oreo for say a Newman’s Own chocolate cookie, what would the ingredients look like?
Organic Unbleached Wheat Flour, Organic Powdered Sugar (Organic Sugar, Organic Corn Starch), Organic Sugar, Organic Palm Fruit Oil, Canola Oil (Expeller Pressed), Cocoa (Processed with Alkali), Unsweetened Chocolate, Salt, Natural Flavor, Sodium Bicarbonate (leavening), Soy Lecithin (an emulsifier).  and most of their money goes to charities when it is purchased.
For another NFL player… Reggie Bush for Pizza Hut. Have you noticed how odd it is in the first commercial he doesn’t take a bite of the pizza? Now they have a new one where he walks in takes a bite and then walks out. I bet pizza is also a part of his training?  I think athletes would have far more longevity and less injuries if they ate a whole food, mostly plant based diet.
Yes as you now know we watch football in our house usually to see the Giants or if my husband is winning his football pool :). It just seems so contradictory of lets say the NFL sponsored commercials where all the players are getting off the bus and taking kids to exercise and be active.  Yet, other players are advocating eating pizza, oreos and taking Nyquil.
Okay Michelle Wie, McDonalds… Really? Specially the one where she drives her golf cart through the drive thru and says “aww a smoothie” as she is getting a bag of food and also a iced latte. I am sure she fuels up with that before she starts a golf tournament.
I think when athletes and celebrities have the platform they do and the money, why not put it into promoting wasn’t isn’t mainstream, but what kids and adults aren’t doing and that is eating healthy, making smart choices. Wouldn’t it be nice here in Tennessee if some of our athletes did a commercial for a local farmers market or CSA? Wow, I’d love to see that. Or maybe worked with Community Food Advocates to get another garden planted in inner city schools that have no access to fresh produce?   There is an idea!!!
So right on Jillian Michaels for endorsing So Delicious Coconut products, and Brendan Brazier for advocating a plant based diet and being an amazing athlete with Vega products. Subway also is presenting a far better message by using Olympic athletes.  I hope that the work you are doing does not go unnoticed by children and adults and we become a healthier country and world!  Ok, Im done, stepping off my box. thank you for listening 🙂
